An introductory course in the academic use of computers. Topics to be covered include Windows, the World Wide Web/Internet, email, information resources, components for computer systems, the campus computing environment, computer operation fundamentals, computer ethics and the law, and selective software applications.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. To understand how to use features commonly found in Microsoft Windows application programs, and how to manipulate and customize the Windows user interface itself.
  2. To learn the basics of the minor application programs that are common to a graphical user interface such as Microsoft Windows XP, as well as some important utilities such as compression and virus protection.
  3. To learn about the Internet in general, as well as how to use it for personal and academic purposes. The course will cover all the major Internet functions, including email and the World Wide Web.
  4. To learn to how to search for and evaluate various types of information.
  5. To become an informed consumer of personal computers and their common peripherals, both locally and by mail order.
  6. To be informed on major health and safety concerns in using personal computers.
  7. To know the legal and ethical limitations on using computers and the Internet.
  8. To become familiar with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Powerpoint and their usage for personal and academic purposes. Hands-On Projects (HOPs):
There will be 6 Hands-On Projects, or HOPs. Each HOP is a step-by-step exercise which reinforces one or more areas of study, and must be completed on a personal computer (loaded with the appropriate software). You are welcome to use any personal computer to which you have access, but we can only guarantee that the computers in the Computer Science Dept. Laboratory (Science 162) will be properly configured for success (this is not likely to be a problem for most HOPs, especially on PCs in the general student laboratory in Rhodes Hall and the Library). Each HOP is assigned on a Monday (see schedule). HOPs are usually due the Sunday two weeks later (with the exception of HOP 4 which is due on a Monday). All HOPs must be turned in to a tutor in the CS Dept. Lab, during its normal hours of operation, for the HOP to be graded. Only original HOPs will be graded (no handwritten HOPs). Be sure to get a receipt for your HOP from the tutor before leaving the Lab.
